Report Finds Credible Harassment Claims Against MP Lowe

An independent investigation has found “credible evidence” that former MP Rupert Lowe and his staff mistreated two female team members in ways that “seem to amount to harassment.” The inquiry, led by a senior lawyer, revealed instances of “victimisation, constant criticisms, and discriminatory behaviour.”

Parliamentary authorities have since opened a separate bullying investigation into Lowe. Additionally, police are looking into allegations that he threatened “physical violence” against his party’s chairman. Lowe has denied all claims, stating his suspension was retaliation for criticizing the party’s leadership.

Following the report’s release, his former party announced his expulsion from its parliamentary group and is in the process of revoking his membership. This reduces the party’s presence in Parliament to four MPs.

The lawyer’s report concluded there was “veracity in the complaints” from both women, noting that Lowe failed to address the “toxic conduct” of colleagues in his office. One complainant stated she faced “hostility and disdain” when raising concerns, while the report emphasized Lowe’s responsibility to ensure fair treatment of staff.

The findings suggested the alleged behavior could breach equality laws, though the investigation did not assess criminal liability. Recommendations included stricter enforcement of anti-bullying and discrimination policies.

Lowe has dismissed the allegations as “outright lies,” calling the process “disgustingly biased.” He claimed the complaints were made only after disciplinary actions were taken against the women—an assertion contradicted by the report, which confirmed the complaints preceded any such actions.

Lowe also alleged the investigation was launched in response to his public criticism of the party leader, as he was suspended shortly after giving a critical interview. Despite his claims of cooperation, the report noted he refused to formally respond to the complaints and publicly dismissed the inquiry as baseless.

The decision to publish the report reportedly came as a surprise, as the investigating lawyer had given Lowe additional time to respond, though further engagement was not expected.
