Labour Councillors Resign Over Starmer’s Leadership

Three district councillors in Derbyshire have left the Labour Party, citing dissatisfaction with the direction of the party under Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer.

Councillors Chris Kane, Emma Stevenson, and Sandra Peake, who represented Bolsover District Council, are now listed as independents on the council’s website.

Peake, a member of Labour for over 30 years, told media outlets: “I’ve got principles—this isn’t the Labour Party I joined.” She expressed concerns over welfare reforms, lack of support for WASPI women, and the handling of the Post Office Horizon scandal. “The rich are getting richer, and the poor are getting poorer,” she added.

While Peake denied reports that her resignation was linked to dissatisfaction with Bolsover MP Natalie Fleet’s performance, she acknowledged that some constituents felt their MP was difficult to reach a sentiment reportedly shared by other local Labour members. “We miss Dennis Skinner,” Peake remarked, referencing the former long-serving MP for the area.

In response, Fleet defended her record, stating: “As the MP for Bolsover, I’m dedicated to delivering for my constituents. Whether it’s casework, supporting local charities and businesses, or raising issues in Parliament, they are my priority. I urge anyone who needs help to contact me.”

A Labour Party spokesperson said the government was facing “tough choices” but remained committed to its agenda.
