Labour MP Apologizes for Failing to Declare Donation While Praising Firm

Steve Yemm, the Labour MP for Mansfield, has referred himself to Parliament’s standards commissioner after failing to disclose a £10,000 donation from a company he praised during a Commons debate.

Last month, while speaking in a discussion on construction standards, Yemm highlighted Power Saving Solutions a Mansfield-based firm as an example of British innovation reducing diesel reliance on building sites. However, he did not declare that the company had donated £10,000 to him in April 2023, as recorded in his register of interests.

Under parliamentary rules, MPs must declare any relevant financial interests when speaking in debates. In a statement first reported by The Guardian, Yemm said: “I fully apologise for not declaring this interest prior to referencing the work of this company located in my constituency. I have made contact with the parliamentary standards commissioner and will formally correct the record at the earliest opportunity.”

During the March 25 debate, Yemm had urged councils and builders to support British industry, citing Power Saving Solutions and JCB’s hydrogen-powered technology as examples of private-sector innovation in clean energy.

Yemm, a former tech and life sciences professional, was elected in 2023, ousting Conservative Ben Bradley to become Mansfield’s first Labour MP in decades.
