HBO has officially announced several major casting choices for its highly anticipated Harry Potter television series, ushering in a new generation of actors to portray the iconic characters of J.K. Rowling’s wizarding world.

Among the most notable reveals, Nick Frost, the British comedian and actor best known for Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead, has been confirmed to play the beloved half-giant Rubeus Hagrid.

Paapa Essiedu, acclaimed for his work in I May Destroy You and Gangs of London, will step into the role of the enigmatic and morally complex Professor Severus Snape.

Meanwhile, Janet McTeer, an Oscar-nominated actress known for Ozark and Albert Nobbs, will portray Professor Minerva McGonagall, the stern but loyal head of Gryffindor House.

The series also welcomes veteran comedian Paul Whitehouse (The Fast Show, Harry & Paul) as Argus Filch, the cantankerous caretaker of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

Rounding out the announcements is Emmy and Olivier Award-winning actor John Lithgow, who will portray Albus Dumbledore, Hogwarts’ revered headmaster. Lithgow had previously hinted at the role earlier this year, sparking early speculation.

Despite these high-profile castings, HBO has yet to reveal who will portray the franchise’s central trio—Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger. An open global casting call attracted over 30,000 submissions, with final selections expected to be announced soon.

The new series is being helmed by Francesca Gardiner, known for her work on Succession, who will serve as showrunner. Mark Mylod, also of Succession fame, will direct multiple episodes and executive produce the series.

Production is slated to begin this summer at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden, with the first season expected to premiere as early as 2026. The project is designed as a long-term adaptation, with each season focusing on a single book in Rowling’s seven-part series.

J.K. Rowling will serve as an executive producer and will play an active role in the creative process. HBO has emphasized that the series will be a “faithful adaptation” of the original novels, promising more in-depth storytelling and expanded character development.

As the franchise prepares to return to screens in a new format, speculation continues to grow around additional casting decisions—including unconfirmed rumours that actor Cillian Murphy may take on the role of Lord Voldemort.

With a fresh cast and a decade-long vision, HBO’s Harry Potter reboot is poised to reintroduce the Wizarding World to a new generation while offering longtime fans a deeper dive into the magical saga that has captivated readers and audiences for over two decades.
