Safwn yn y Bwlch Revived to Unite Welsh Rugby Fans

Safwn yn y Bwlch has returned with a new version by Welsh opera stars Trystan Llŷr Griffiths and Steffan Lloyd Owen. Ahead of the Autumn Rugby Internationals, they hope to lift spirits and unite Welsh rugby supporters.

Originally, Safwn yn y Bwlch acted as an unofficial Welsh anthem. Its title translates to “We Stand Together,” sending a clear message of national unity. Therefore, it calls for pride in Wales, its language, and its people.

As Welsh rugby struggles on and off the field, Safwn yn y Bwlch resonates more than ever. Despite divisions, the song reminds everyone that standing together strengthens the nation.

Outside the opera stage, both singers play rugby locally. Trystan represents Crymych RFC, and Steffan plays for Llangefni RFC. Consequently, rugby connects them to the communities that shaped them and reflects national identity.

Trystan said: “Rugby has always been part of my life. Watching the crisis unfold has been hard. We wanted to do something positive. Therefore, recording this song draws on our roots and demonstrates our strength as a nation. I hope it lifts supporters and keeps faith alive.”

Similarly, Steffan added: “Welsh rugby faces huge challenges. Safwn yn y Bwlch speaks directly to our values and calls for unity. Moreover, it inspires pride. I hope it motivates players and fans during the Autumn Tests and beyond.”

The anthem was written by Glyn Roberts and Richard Morris. Originally performed by Hogia’r Wyddfa in 1969, it became a near-national anthem. In their 1990 memoir, the group remembered the passion it sparked among audiences.

This new version features arrangements by Caradog Williams and production by Branwen Munn. Additionally, Guto Vaughan filmed the video at Newport Sands and Carningli Mountain. This fresh production brings the classic anthem to a new generation.

Therefore, Safwn yn y Bwlch now returns as a symbol of national pride, community, and resilience. Welsh rugby supporters can rally behind their team with renewed hope.
