Duke of York Status Explained

Must read

Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor still holds the title of Duke of York, despite losing royal privileges last year. Legal experts confirm he can continue using it. He can also use personal stationery and a coat of arms.

King Charles removed Andrew’s style of Royal Highness and the title of Prince in November 2025 after public backlash over the Epstein scandal. The king stripped him of military ranks and other honors. However, royal decree alone cannot revoke a peerage.

Michael Rhodes, a peerage expert, explains that removing Andrew from the official roll does not end his titles. Rhodes cites peers who stayed titled despite not appearing on the roll.

Andrew could modify his coat of arms to reflect the loss of royal privileges. His ex-wife, Sarah Ferguson, keeps calling herself Sarah, Duchess of York, since divorced wives of peers retain their titles.

Royal commentators suggest the Duke of York title may shape Andrew’s future abroad. In the Middle East, society respects titles, offering status even amid scandal. Reports indicate Abu Dhabi offered Andrew and Sarah a residence during the Epstein controversy as gratitude for his diplomatic work.

Andrew’s daughters, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, remain Her Royal Highness. King Charles spared them from his father’s removal. Observers note he avoided parliamentary action to prevent public debate about the royal family.

Historically, Parliament rarely strips royal titles. In 1917, King George V removed titles from German-affiliated royals during World War I. Experts emphasize peers usually lose titles only after serious criminal convictions.

Andrew also ranks eighth in the line of succession. In a rare scenario, he could serve as Regent if both King Charles and the Prince of Wales cannot reign before Prince George turns eighteen in 2031.

The Duke of York retains legal status, a coat of arms, and potential influence abroad. His life in the UK may be limited, but his title remains intact.
