Victoria Starmer and Prime Minister Keir Starmer hosted a reception at 10 Downing Street this week to mark International Women’s Day. This was their first event together celebrating women of impact from across the country. The reception recognized women who make a tangible difference in their communities.

During her speech, Victoria highlighted the evening’s theme and noted the dedication of many inspirational women. For example, electrician Demi Whitehead encourages girls to pursue careers in construction. Similarly, Sergeant Merini Sevakasiga advocates for domestic abuse survivors in the Army. In addition, Molly Bulmer, a community coach for Sheffield Wednesday, works to reduce knife crime among youth. Valorie Lolomari, founder of Women of Grace, supports survivors of FGM and women who have experienced miscarriage.

Victoria also reflected on women who shaped her own life. She mentioned her sister, friends from Cardiff University, and colleagues in the NHS. Their guidance and support, she said, had a huge influence on her career and personal growth. Moreover, Victoria highlighted Eshita Kabra-Davies, founder of the fashion rental platform ByRotation, noting that she rented her outfit for the event. This choice, she added, supported a female-led business and promoted women in tech.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer introduced his wife and joked that he was her “support act.” Then he praised the contributions of the women in the room and emphasized their societal impact. He also stressed the government’s commitment to creating a fair, inclusive Britain. He cited efforts to improve workplace equality, address the cost of living, and reduce violence against women and girls.

Furthermore, Starmer highlighted women holding key government positions. He mentioned Chancellor Rachel Reeves, Home Secretary Yvette Cooper, Shabana Mahmood, and Bridget Phillipson. He also acknowledged Victoria Starmer’s support, calling her his rock and someone he relies on daily.

Finally, Victoria closed the reception by addressing the long-term influence of the guests’ work. She told attendees that their efforts shape opportunities for future generations. She said, “You are all, in your own ways, making an impact, not just for the women you work with today, but for the next generation of young women.” The event celebrated and inspired women of impact, showing how their dedication transforms communities.
