Scottish actor James McAvoy has transformed dramatically for his new James McAvoy role in the TV adaptation of Frankie Boyle’s novel Meantime.
Sky announced last year that Boyle’s debut book would be adapted into a series. Production is handled by Expectation, known for Alma’s Not Normal and Clarkson’s Farm.
McAvoy plays Felix McAveety, a Valium-addicted aspiring writer investigating a murder in Glasgow. The story unfolds after the Scottish independence referendum.
Newly released photos show McAvoy in a disheveled grey suit with a beige shirt. In other scenes, he wears grey jogging bottoms and a knitted jumper.
The novel, released in 2022, follows McAveety as he searches for his murdered best friend, Marina, found in a Glasgow park.
As the police suspect him, McAveety sets off on his own investigation alongside his neighbour Donnie. Along the way, he uses mind-altering drugs to cope with the stress.
McAvoy, also from Glasgow, has experience playing complex characters with mental health struggles. In 2016, he starred in Split, portraying a man with 23 personalities.
Earlier, in 2013, he led the film adaptation of Irvine Welsh’s Filth, playing a corrupt, drug-using police officer seeking career advancement.
For this James McAvoy role, he needed a significant physical and psychological transformation to capture McAveety’s addiction and inner turmoil.
Observers note that McAvoy’s performances often explore flawed, morally complex characters. In Meantime, he balances dark humour with the gritty realities of Glasgow life.
The series promises a tense, darkly funny crime story while remaining faithful to Boyle’s original vision. Production is set to continue throughout 2026.
Fans can expect McAvoy to deliver another intense performance. His James McAvoy role as Felix highlights the actor’s versatility and dedication to challenging characters.
