Starmer Tells Trump UK Won’t Be Dragged Into Iran War

Must read

Keir Starmer has told Donald Trump that the UK will not be drawn into a wider war with Iran.

The Prime Minister made the comments as tensions continue to rise in the Gulf. He confirmed the UK is working with allies to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global oil and gas supplies.

However, Starmer stressed that Britain will not join offensive military action. He said the UK will defend itself and its allies but will avoid escalation. Starmer added that ending the conflict quickly remains a priority.

He warned that a prolonged war would increase global instability and worsen the cost-of-living crisis. The Prime Minister said discussions are ongoing with European, Gulf and North American partners. He also met Mark Carney in Downing Street to discuss the situation.

Despite pressure from Trump, Starmer has not committed to sending warships to the region. The US president has urged allies to help secure the strait. He warned that NATO could face serious consequences if members fail to act.

So far, several countries have resisted that request. Instead, UK officials are considering alternative measures. These include deploying minesweeping drones to help keep the route open. Starmer acknowledged that reopening the Strait of Hormuz will be difficult.

He said any plan must involve multiple international partners. He also emphasised the need for a “credible” and “viable” strategy before taking action. Meanwhile, the government is preparing for economic fallout at home. Rising oil and gas prices have already increased pressure on households.

Starmer announced a £53 million support package for homes that rely on heating oil. He said the funding will target the most vulnerable families. The Prime Minister also warned energy companies against exploiting the crisis.

He said firms could face legal action if they break the law by raising prices unfairly. Trump has criticised the UK’s stance during the conflict. He expressed frustration that Britain did not support earlier US military actions.

A senior UK minister responded by saying the country is not obliged to join a “war of choice.” Officials also stressed that the Iran conflict does not fall under NATO’s remit. Starmer confirmed he discussed the issue directly with Trump over the weekend. He said the UK will continue to review its options carefully.

For now, Britain remains focused on diplomacy and economic stability rather than military escalation.
