The Ukraine energy deal moved into the spotlight after Prime Minister Keir Starmer confirmed new support for Kyiv ahead of the G7 summit. The Ukraine energy deal includes enriched uranium supplies for Ukrainian power stations. It also introduces a fresh wave of sanctions aimed at weakening Russia’s war effort.
Starmer announced that Britain will provide enriched uranium to help keep Ukraine’s nuclear energy network running. The government also plans to introduce new sanctions against Russian shipping operations and financial networks linked to the Kremlin.
The prime minister said the latest measures will strengthen support for Ukraine. He also argued that they will increase pressure on Moscow. He believes cutting revenue from Russian oil exports remains a key part of the strategy.
Under the plan, UK-based nuclear company Urenco will supply enriched uranium to Ukraine’s state energy operator, Energoatom. Britain will support the agreement with export finance worth around £210 million.
Officials believe the package will help secure energy supplies for the next two years. The agreement comes as Russian attacks continue to damage critical infrastructure across Ukraine.
Alongside the energy package, the UK will expand sanctions against Russia’s so-called shadow fleet. These vessels help transport Russian oil and gas while avoiding existing international restrictions.
The new measures will also target financial networks. British officials believe these systems help Moscow bypass Western sanctions. In addition, the package targets three companies and 10 officers linked to Russia’s GRU military intelligence agency.
The government claims those individuals and organizations helped obtain Western technology for the Russian military. Officials say they used covert channels to support those efforts.
Starmer strongly condemned the latest Russian missile strikes on Ukraine. He described the attacks as brutal and unacceptable. He also said allies must continue supporting Kyiv for as long as necessary.
The announcement came as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky arrived for the G7 summit in the French resort town of Evian-les-Bains. World leaders are expected to discuss military aid, energy security, and long-term support for Ukraine during the meeting.
The British leader plans to urge G7 partners to increase their collective efforts. He believes stronger economic pressure on Russia can help create conditions for a lasting peace.
Starmer also wants allies to maintain steady support for Ukraine’s economy and energy sector. He said countries must work together to help Ukraine remain resilient during the conflict. The Ukraine energy deal forms an important part of that wider effort.
Meanwhile, reports from Russia indicated that a Ukrainian drone strike damaged a facility at the Moscow oil refinery operated by Gazpromneft. Local officials said emergency teams responded quickly. They also reported that the incident caused no casualties.
The refinery serves the Moscow region and ranks among the country’s largest fuel-processing sites. Recent months have seen a rise in drone attacks against Russian energy facilities. Those strikes have increased pressure on fuel production and supply chains.
The Ukraine energy deal and the latest sanctions package underline Britain’s commitment to supporting Kyiv. They also increase economic and political pressure on Russia. As G7 leaders gather for talks, the UK hopes these measures will strengthen international unity and reinforce Ukraine’s position in the months ahead.
