Human rights organizations and refugee advocates have strongly condemned new government measures preventing refugees who arrived by small boat from gaining British citizenship.
The policy has sparked widespread criticism, with advocacy groups describing it as “performative cruelty.” Campaign groups argue the measures unfairly punish vulnerable people seeking safety and violate international refugee conventions.
“This policy ignores the reality that many people fleeing persecution have no safe, legal routes to reach the UK,” said a spokesperson from the Refugee Council. “It effectively creates a two-tier system based on method of arrival rather than legitimate need for protection.”
The government defends the policy as necessary to deter dangerous Channel crossings and disrupt smuggling operations. Immigration officials maintain that people should seek asylum through official channels.
Legal experts have questioned the policy’s compatibility with international refugee law and suggest it could face legal challenges.
