Labour leader Keir Starmer’s shadow defence secretary John Healey has emphasized that Ukraine’s interests must remain central to any diplomatic discussions about the region’s future, speaking at a defence policy forum in London yesterday.
“Any meaningful dialogue about security in Eastern Europe must have Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity at its absolute core,” Healey stated during his address at the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI). “We cannot allow a situation where decisions are made about Ukraine without Ukraine.”
The shadow defence secretary outlined Labour’s position on continued support for Ukraine, emphasizing a commitment to maintaining and potentially expanding military and humanitarian assistance. “Our commitment to supporting Ukraine’s defence of its territory and its people must remain unwavering,” he said.
Healey also called for greater coordination among NATO allies in their approach to regional security discussions. “A unified approach among Western allies, with Ukraine’s interests at the forefront, provides the strongest foundation for any diplomatic progress,” he added.
The statement comes amid ongoing discussions about international support packages and defence cooperation agreements. Conservative Defence Minister James Cartlidge responded by stating the government’s position remains “fully aligned with ensuring Ukraine’s voice is heard in all diplomatic channels.”
Military analysts note that Healey’s comments reflect a growing consensus among British political parties about the importance of maintaining strong support for Ukraine’s position in any future negotiations.
Professor Sarah Mitchell, an expert in international relations at Oxford University, commented: “These statements signal a clear cross-party commitment to ensuring Ukraine’s agency in determining its future. This kind of political unity on foreign policy matters is significant.”
