UK Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer has expressed strong support for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky following former US President Donald Trump’s recent remarks referring to Zelensky as a “dictator.”
During a rally in South Carolina, Trump made the controversial comment while discussing US aid to Ukraine, suggesting that President Joe Biden had given “unlimited money to a dictator.” The remark drew widespread criticism, as Zelensky has been internationally recognized for leading Ukraine’s resistance against Russia’s ongoing invasion.
Responding to Trump’s statement, Starmer reaffirmed his commitment to Ukraine and its leader, calling Zelensky a symbol of “courage and democracy in the face of aggression.” The Labour leader emphasized the importance of continued UK support for Ukraine, aligning with the UK government’s stance on standing firmly against Russian aggression.
“President Zelensky is not just a leader fighting for his country’s freedom; he represents the principles of democracy that we all stand for,” Starmer said. “It is crucial that Western allies remain united in supporting Ukraine against Russian aggression.”
The UK has been one of Ukraine’s key allies since the beginning of the conflict, providing military aid and diplomatic support. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has also reiterated the UK’s commitment to standing with Ukraine, despite growing concerns in some political circles over prolonged financial and military assistance.
Trump’s remarks come at a time when he is leading the race for the Republican nomination in the 2024 US presidential election. His views on Ukraine have raised concerns among European allies, particularly regarding future US support should he return to office.
