Foreign Secretary David Lammy is hosting critical talks in London today. He calls Russia an “existential threat” to European security. Russia’s existential threat is a focal point of the meeting, which brings together ministers from the Weimar+ group—France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Poland, and the EU—at Lancaster House. They aim to show unity against Russian aggression in Ukraine.
Lammy is expected to unveil further sanctions targeting those backing Russia’s invasion. He emphasized that Russia’s existential threat means Europe must act together to protect sovereignty and peace. He stated that the future of Ukraine is tied to the continent’s stability.
“This is a once-in-a-generation moment for Europe’s security,” Lammy declared. “We must stand united and firm against Russia’s existential threat.”
The summit follows a historic visit to Kyiv on Saturday by the leaders of the UK, France, Germany, and Poland. There, alongside U.S. representatives, they urged Russia to accept a 30-day ceasefire and enter peace negotiations. This is despite the existential threat from Russia.
President Vladimir Putin responded by expressing willingness to hold direct talks with Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called this shift a “positive sign.” However, he demanded that Russia prove its sincerity with an “immediate and lasting ceasefire.”
Home Secretary Yvette Cooper, speaking on Sunday, echoed calls for peace. She noted that global pressure had mounted and urged Moscow to respond seriously to ceasefire demands. This is especially important considering Russia’s existential threat to the region.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who also visited Kyiv with Zelensky and President Macron, stressed that European and American leaders now “speak with one voice.” He insisted Putin no longer had excuses to delay peace against this existential threat posed by Russia. He pointed out past ceasefires required no extra conditions.
Starmer warned there could be “no more ifs and buts.” He urged Russia to confirm a full halt to hostilities beginning Monday.
The UK government sees the strengthening of European security as a pillar of its broader Plan for Change. Lammy emphasized that confronting the existential threat from Russia is essential to a strong and secure Britain.
