A Conservative MP charged with sexual assault will soon face court after serious allegations emerged from two separate women. The incidents allegedly happened in August 2023 at the exclusive Groucho Club in Soho, London.
Patrick Spencer, aged 37, won election in July 2024 as the MP for Central Suffolk and North Ipswich. However, the alleged incidents occurred before his election to Parliament. According to the Metropolitan Police, he voluntarily attended an interview in March. After reviewing the evidence, authorities proceeded with formal charges.
The Crown Prosecution Service reviewed police findings before approving prosecution. Frank Ferguson, head of the CPS special crime division, confirmed the decision. Officials emphasized that the case followed thorough legal and evidentiary procedures.
Spencer strongly denies the allegations. His legal team insists the claims are unfounded and politically damaging. They stated he will defend himself vigorously in court.
The Conservative Party took immediate action once charges were confirmed. Party officials suspended Spencer and stripped him of the Tory whip. As a result, he now sits in Parliament as an independent MP. He has also been barred from entering the parliamentary estate during the investigation.
New parliamentary rules permit restrictions on MPs under investigation for serious offences. A risk assessment panel can impose travel bans and access limits in such cases. These measures reflect recent efforts to uphold public trust and institutional integrity.
Before entering politics, Spencer built a career in finance and government advisory roles. He also worked with the Centre for Social Justice and served as a senior adviser at the Department for Education.
In his maiden speech, Spencer emphasized moral leadership and public service integrity. He called for higher ethical standards in public life, promising to restore public faith in politics.
The Groucho Club, where the alleged assaults occurred, is known for attracting influential figures in media and politics. It has maintained elite membership since its opening in 1985.
The MP charged with sexual assault will appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on 16 June. Legal proceedings will determine the next steps as the case unfolds.
