A major Labour-union rift has emerged after Unite, the UK’s largest union, sharply criticized Labour for not defending workers. Unite leader Sharon Graham warned that working-class supporters are abandoning the party “in droves.”
The tension escalated when Unite suspended Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner’s membership over her handling of Birmingham’s bin strikes. Labour insists Rayner left Unite in April, calling the suspension a “silly stunt.”
Delegates at Unite’s conference voted to reconsider ties with Labour. The union may cut funding—currently £1.2 million yearly—or disaffiliate entirely. Graham warned that Labour must prove its commitment to workers.
“Members need to see affiliation is worth something,” she said. “Right now, it’s hard to justify.” She hinted funds might better serve members directly.
The Labour-union rift centers on Birmingham’s long-running bin strike. Unite workers oppose pay cuts for Grade 4 drivers, which could slash wages from £40,000 to £32,000. Rayner urged acceptance of a council deal, angering the union.
