Cheshire East councillors face abuse in alarming numbers, according to a new report. A recent survey reveals that many have endured stalking, death threats, and even physical violence. Shockingly, over a third have considered quitting due to harassment.
The council conducted the survey after recognizing rising abuse against elected members. Out of 55 respondents, 82% reported harassment or intimidation. Additionally, 22% received threats of violence, while 6% faced death threats. Physical attacks affected 4% of councillors.
Social media played a major role, with 82% of abuse occurring online. Meanwhile, 62% experienced in-person harassment, and 51% received abusive emails. Some councillors reported stalking, property damage, and even protests at their homes. Others found private information leaked online.
The abuse has taken a heavy toll. About 35% of respondents admitted considering resignation. Many feel unsafe, with over half calling current protection measures ineffective. The findings highlight a growing crisis in local governance.
A task group has recommended urgent action. They suggest providing personal safety devices for councillors. De-escalation training could also help reduce conflicts. Furthermore, the council may appoint a dedicated officer to handle abuse cases.
Fiona Wilson, who chairs the task group, called the results alarming. She emphasized the need for stronger safeguards. The council will discuss the report on 6 August. They may also join the “Debate Not Hate” campaign to promote respectful politics.
