Starmer Rules Out Visa Relaxation Despite UK-India Trade Boost

Must read

Prime Minister Keir Starmer has confirmed that the United Kingdom will not relax visa rules for India, even as UK-India ties strengthen through new trade and cultural partnerships. His remarks came during a high-profile visit to India aimed at promoting economic cooperation and investment opportunities.

Starmer arrived in Mumbai leading a delegation of over 100 business leaders, cultural figures, and university heads. The visit followed the signing of a landmark trade deal in July. Both governments hailed it as the most significant agreement since Brexit. Despite growing expectations for immigration reforms, the prime minister emphasized that visas were not part of the discussions.

The new trade deal lowers tariffs on UK exports such as cars and whisky. It also makes Indian textiles and jewelry more affordable in British markets. Additionally, it exempts Indian employees on short-term UK assignments from paying social security contributions for three years. However, Starmer stressed that immigration policy remains unchanged. This reflects his government’s broader aim to reduce overall migration levels.

Speaking to reporters on his flight to Mumbai, Starmer said no Indian business leaders had raised visa concerns with him. Instead, he highlighted how UK-India ties could open “massive opportunities” for investment and job creation. He added that his focus was on deepening commercial and cultural partnerships rather than expanding immigration routes.

During his trip, Starmer announced that Bollywood’s Yash Raj Films will produce three new movies in the UK from 2026. Yash Raj Films CEO Akshaye Widhani praised the UK’s infrastructure and creative environment. He described the collaboration as a major step forward for both nations.

The visit also brought new aviation developments. British Airways confirmed a third daily flight between Delhi and London. Meanwhile, Manchester Airport revealed plans for a direct route to Delhi. Both initiatives aim to improve business and tourism connectivity. They reinforce UK-India ties further.

Starmer is also set to meet Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the visit. He said he would discuss ongoing consular matters, including the case of Jagtar Singh Johal. Johal is a British Sikh detained in India for seven years without conviction.

The prime minister concluded by saying that his government’s focus remains on economic growth, collaboration, and maintaining a balanced approach to migration. This approach ensures that trade and diplomacy continue to flourish without altering the UK’s immigration stance.
