The Beatles started as a lively band of teenagers, performing cover songs for fun and money. Yet by the height of Beatlemania, pressures of fame created serious strain. Working together for nearly a decade began to take its toll on all members.
Paul McCartney assumed increasing creative control after the death of manager Brian Epstein. Meanwhile, George Harrison resented his secondary role compared to McCartney and John Lennon. Tensions escalated as Harrison felt sidelined in musical decisions.
Problems first appeared in 1967. Harrison contributed only one song, “Within You Without You,” to Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. He had previously fought to include three songs on Revolver, but he felt disconnected from McCartney’s vision. By then, Harrison admitted he had “lost interest in being fab.”
Tensions peaked during the Let It Be sessions. Harrison had spent time in upstate New York with Bob Dylan and The Band. He admired their collaborative style and hoped The Beatles could adopt it. However, returning to England exposed him again to McCartney’s firm control over arrangements.
Engineer and producer Glyn Johns described the sessions as uncomfortable. Harrison’s former wife, Patti Boyd, said her husband was “terribly unhappy.” She explained that constant arguments left Harrison angry and frustrated, especially because he had embraced a new spiritual path.
Boyd emphasized that the core problem lay between Harrison and McCartney. “George saw Paul as difficult,” she said. “They tolerated each other but did not really like each other. They did not love each other.”
Harrison briefly quit the band during these sessions. He returned only after insisting on moving the recordings from Twickenham Studios, hiring keyboardist Billy Preston, and asking McCartney to soften his approach. This solution proved temporary. Later that same year, John Lennon left the group entirely.
