Police have charged a woman with murder after a tragic Westminster baby death involving a newborn girl in central London. Officers launched the investigation after the infant fell from a residential building on Horseferry Road in Westminster.
Emergency services rushed to the scene on Saturday after reports of a baby falling from height. Paramedics treated the 18-day-old infant at the location before transporting her to a hospital trauma centre.
Doctors attempted to save the child. However, the baby later died from her injuries.
Police arrested Zahira Byjaouane, 43, in connection with the Westminster baby death. Authorities later charged her with murder.
Investigators confirmed that Byjaouane lives on Horseferry Road. A court has remanded her in custody ahead of her appearance at Westminster Magistrates’ Court.
The hearing is scheduled for Monday. Officers continue gathering evidence as part of the ongoing investigation.
Following the incident, police sealed off sections of nearby Great Peter Street, which sits close to Horseferry Road. Officers blocked traffic while forensic teams examined the area.
Investigators focused their work on a property inside the Peabody Estate housing complex. Forensic specialists examined a third-floor flat as part of the inquiry.
Meanwhile, the London Ambulance Service confirmed that paramedics responded quickly after receiving the emergency call. Crews treated the newborn at the scene before rushing her to hospital.
Residents and members of the public later placed flowers and a toy near the estate building. The tribute appeared shortly after police lifted the cordon.
Alison Foxwell from the Metropolitan Police is leading the investigation. She described the death of an infant as an extremely tragic event.
Foxwell also expressed sympathy for the child’s relatives. She said officers are working urgently to understand the circumstances surrounding the Westminster baby death.
Police believe the incident occurred in a domestic setting. However, investigators still want to hear from anyone who may have information.
