Cillian Murphy Explains Peaky Blinders Movie Ending

Must read

Cillian Murphy has explained why Tommy Shelby had to die in Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man. He called it a necessary ending for the character.

Speaking to Netflix’s Tudum, Murphy said the Season 6 finale offered a satisfying conclusion. However, the film gave fans definitive closure. “Tommy was looking for peace and a way out,” Murphy said. “Eventually, he finds it. That makes the ending feel right.”

The film shows Tommy asking Duke to shoot him, a change from the TV series’ ambiguous finale. Murphy said the scene was filmed in the first week of production. Murphy described the moment as unexpectedly emotional. “They held each other and supported each other. It created a beautiful shape inside the warehouse,” he said.

Steven Knight confirmed he planned the ending from the start. “I wanted the son to kill the father,” Knight said. Knight also referenced a line from the show’s past. The phrase “You’d do it for a horse” nods to Season 2, Episode 2’s iconic “I am a horse” line.

The Peaky Blinders movie wraps up the Shelby saga, giving fans a clear and emotional conclusion to Tommy Shelby’s journey.
