John Swinney has set out an ambitious scotland independence plan as he targets a historic political milestone. He said he aims to lead an independent Scotland by 2031 following a future referendum.
Speaking during the launch of the Scottish National Party campaign, Swinney outlined his strategy for the coming years. He confirmed that he wants a second independence referendum to take place in 2028. If successful, he believes Scotland could leave the UK soon after.
Previously, voters rejected independence in the 2014 Scottish independence referendum. However, Swinney argued that political conditions have changed significantly since then. In particular, he pointed to the UK’s exit from the European Union as a key shift.
As a result, he believes voters may now view independence differently. He said supporters must focus on persuasion rather than division. Therefore, his approach centres on building broader public support across Scotland.

The SNP leader also acknowledged personal challenges during the campaign. He explained that he balances political duties with family responsibilities at home. His wife lives with multiple sclerosis, while his teenage son prepares for exams.
Even so, Swinney said he has structured his campaign carefully. For example, he tries to return home most evenings despite a busy schedule. As a result, he maintains a balance between public life and family commitments.
