Amy Winehouse’s father has lost a High Court dispute over items that once belonged to the late singer. Moreover, the court ruling case focused on his claims against two of Amy Winehouse’s close friends regarding auction sales.
Mitch Winehouse, who oversees his daughter’s estate, sued stylist Naomi Parry and friend Catriona Gourlay. In addition, he accused them of selling personal belongings at United States auctions without informing him. However, the court dismissed those accusations after reviewing the evidence.
Lawyers for Winehouse argued that both women hid details about the auctions. Furthermore, they said the estate struggled to get clear answers. Nevertheless, the defendants denied any wrongdoing and insisted they either owned or legitimately received the items.
Judge Sarah Clarke KC delivered the court ruling case judgment and rejected the claims. Moreover, she said neither defendant deliberately concealed disputed items. In addition, she found that Winehouse could have uncovered the information through reasonable checks.
Amy Winehouse died in 2011 at the age of 27 from alcohol poisoning. As a result, her estate, music, and personal possessions continue to attract strong public and financial interest. Meanwhile, her legacy still generates global attention.
The court heard that auction sales in 2021 raised significant funds. Furthermore, the collection included hundreds of items linked to her life and career. However, the judge found no evidence of misconduct in how the sales took place.
In addition, evidence showed disagreement over how to divide the auction proceeds. For example, Winehouse believed the money would go to family members and the Amy Winehouse Foundation. However, the court ruled that no legal agreement supported his claim over the items.
The judge also criticised aspects of Winehouse’s approach to the case. Moreover, she described him as a strong personality deeply affected by his daughter’s death. In contrast, she pointed out inconsistencies in his evidence during the hearing.
Following the ruling, Naomi Parry welcomed the decision. Furthermore, she said the court cleared her name after years of allegations. In addition, she rejected claims that she acted improperly while working with Amy Winehouse.
The court ruling case ended with a full dismissal of Mitch Winehouse’s claims. Consequently, the High Court closed the matter and ruled in favour of the defendants.
