Burnham challenge has intensified inside Labour after Keir Starmer ruled out setting any timeline for leaving 10 Downing Street.
The Prime Minister said he still plans to lead the party into the next general election. Meanwhile, Andy Burnham pledged to reshape Labour if he wins the Makerfield by-election and returns to Parliament. Starmer spoke in London on Tuesday as questions continued over his leadership. He rejected calls to outline an exit plan if Burnham secures a route back to Westminster.
According to the Prime Minister, he wants to fight the next general election. He also said his focus remains on rebuilding support after recent political setbacks. In addition, Starmer admitted recent events had distracted attention from government priorities. Moreover, he said he would not step aside voluntarily.
The Labour leader stressed that serving the country remains his main priority. Internal party disputes, he said, should not dominate his agenda. Pressure on Labour has grown after Burnham confirmed he wants to stand in the Makerfield by-election. The contest could open a path for him to launch a future leadership campaign.
Speaking at an investment summit in Leeds, Burnham said a vote for him would mean a vote to change Labour. He argued the party must reform if it wants to regain trust among voters. Burnham also said Labour’s previous offer to voters had not gone far enough. As a result, he promised policies focused on affordability, reindustrialisation and stronger local powers.
Furthermore, Burnham called for more devolution. He argued Britain has become too centralised and said local communities need more control over spending and decision-making. At the same time, the Burnham challenge overlaps with renewed Brexit tensions. Burnham insisted he is not campaigning to rejoin the European Union during the by-election.
The Greater Manchester mayor acknowledged he has previously supported long-term membership of the European Union. He said reopening Brexit arguments would distract from urgent domestic issues. The Makerfield seat became vacant after Josh Simons formally stepped down as an MP. Labour’s National Executive Committee will choose its candidate later this week.
Starmer said the by-election will become a direct battle between Labour and Reform UK. Therefore, he urged party members to unite behind whoever wins the nomination. Burnham challenge now places fresh pressure on Labour’s leadership, as political tensions continue to rise before the key by-election vote.
