The unrest erupted after Digwa received a life sentence for the fatal stabbing of 18-year-old Nowak. The attack took place in December as the teenager walked home after spending time with friends. Demonstrators gathered on Tuesday evening and marched through Southampton. Tensions later escalated near the area connected to Digwa. Protesters threw objects toward police officers, causing injuries and forcing officers to withdraw temporarily.
Pritheepal Singh, representing the Council of Southampton Gurdwaras, said the scenes created significant concern across local communities. He called for understanding and cooperation as tensions continue. Meanwhile, Sikh community leaders reaffirmed their support for Nowak’s relatives. They said the community stands firmly with the family during an extremely difficult period.
Former council chair Harjap Singh addressed concerns surrounding the weapon used in the attack. He stated that Sikh teachings do not support violence or aggression. He added that using a kirpan to harm another person contradicts Sikh values. Furthermore, he highlighted the long history of Sikh contributions to British society. He noted that Sikh communities consistently promote respect, cooperation, and positive relations with people from all backgrounds.
