Other names have also emerged in discussions. Al Carns has hinted at a possible run, while Darren Jones has also been mentioned. Still, both would need support from at least 81 Labour MPs to qualify.
The Burnham leadership bid follows Starmer’s decision to step down after growing pressure inside the party. Although Starmer led Labour to a landslide election victory in 2024, his popularity later dropped as economic struggles and political controversies damaged his standing.
Ultimately, Burnham leadership bid now looks like the clearest path forward for Labour. If no challenger emerges, Britain could have a new prime minister within days as the party seeks a fresh start before the next general election.
