ITV Sky Deal: Coronation Street And Emmerdale Future Confirmed

Must read

The future of Coronation Street and Emmerdale has become clearer after Sky agreed to buy ITV’s media and entertainment business in a deal worth up to £1.6 billion. The announcement has sparked questions from viewers, but executives insist popular programmes will continue without disruption. The ITV Sky deal marks one of the biggest changes in British broadcasting in recent years.

The agreement includes ITV’s free-to-air television channels and the ITVX streaming platform. However, ITV Studios will remain a separate business and will not form part of the transaction. ITV Studios produces many of the broadcaster’s biggest entertainment programmes. These include Love Island and I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!.

Sky and ITV say the partnership will strengthen British television as competition from global streaming platforms continues to increase. Company leaders believe the combined business will compete more effectively with international services. Soap fans quickly questioned whether the takeover would affect Coronation Street and Emmerdale. Both programmes have already experienced schedule changes during the past year.

Earlier this year, ITV reduced Coronation Street’s weekly output. The broadcaster also shortened each episode to 30 minutes as part of a wider programming overhaul. Despite those earlier changes, presenters have reassured viewers that the soaps will continue as normal. Television reporter Richard Arnold said audiences should not expect immediate changes to their favourite programmes.

He explained that the agreement still requires approval from shareholders and regulators before completion. Even so, he stressed that daily broadcasting will continue without interruption during that process. According to Arnold, viewers can continue watching Coronation Street, Emmerdale, Good Morning Britain, and other familiar programmes as usual. He added that the takeover will not affect current schedules in the short term.

Sky Group Chief Executive Dana Strong also welcomed the agreement. She said combining Sky and ITV’s media businesses would bring together leading free television, subscription services, and streaming platforms. Strong said the partnership would help preserve high-quality British programming while adapting to changing viewing habits. She also confirmed ITV will continue operating as a public service broadcaster.

Sky described the British media industry as highly competitive. The company argued that larger media groups now have a stronger chance of competing with global streaming companies and online video platforms. Executives also confirmed that audiences will continue watching many of ITV’s biggest programmes after the transaction. Those include Coronation Street, Emmerdale, This Morning, Loose Women, Lorraine, News at Ten, Love Island, and I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!.

The companies expect the combined business to strengthen British television while maintaining popular entertainment, news, and sport. They believe the partnership will also improve investment opportunities for future content. The ITV Sky deal remains subject to regulatory and shareholder approval before it becomes official. Until then, ITV will continue operating normally across its television channels and streaming services.

For soap fans, the message remains straightforward. Coronation Street and Emmerdale will stay on screen while the approval process continues. As the broadcasting industry evolves, the ITV Sky deal aims to build a stronger British media company without disrupting the programmes millions of viewers enjoy every week.
