In a move to tackle digital inequality and improve public access to the internet, Westminster City Council has unveiled a two-month pilot program designed to offer seamless free Wi-Fi across central London. Dubbed Connected London WiFi, the initiative allows users to connect to a network of participating public Wi-Fi hotspots with a single log-in, aiming to simplify connectivity for residents and tourists alike.
The Labour-run council’s new project strives to create a unified digital experience that eliminates the frustrations of constantly re-entering credentials for various Wi-Fi networks. The program is expected to provide a solution to issues like patchy connections in crowded areas, particularly on high-traffic streets like Oxford Street and Covent Garden.
QR codes have been placed at 50 strategic locations throughout Westminster, including popular businesses, cultural landmarks, and public spaces that already offer free Wi-Fi. By scanning these codes, users can create a profile, which then allows their devices to automatically connect to participating networks within range during the trial period.
Geoff Barraclough, Westminster’s Cabinet Member for Planning and Economic Development, emphasized the positive impact of this system, noting that unreliable mobile connections in busy areas have long been a barrier for locals and visitors. “This initiative is designed to make digital access easier and more reliable for everyone,” Barraclough said.
Howard Dawber, Deputy Mayor for Business and Growth, also voiced support for the project, calling it a significant step toward reducing digital divides and promoting accessibility across the city. If successful, the scheme may be expanded to other boroughs and potentially throughout the entire capital.
Once the pilot concludes, Westminster City Council will assess the results and explore options for a broader rollout, including possible alternatives to QR codes for an even more user-friendly experience. This initiative is a key part of the council’s ongoing efforts to improve digital inclusion and ensure that London remains a connected, forward-thinking city.
