Treasury minister Darren Jones has declared that the era of globalisation “has ended,” following US President Donald Trump’s sweeping new tariffs, which include a 10% import duty on UK goods. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer is expected to announce measures to protect British businesses, signalling a shift toward stronger state intervention.
Jones said the UK must now focus on strengthening domestic industries and building new alliances. He denied the government was reacting late, saying ministers are “trying to get ahead” of global changes, with plans to boost the NHS, skills, and industry.
While the UK is taking a diplomatic approach rather than imposing retaliatory tariffs, Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch disagreed that globalisation is over, calling it “fragmentation.” She urged Labour to revive trade talks first initiated under Boris Johnson.
