Graham Coxon has reflected on his years with Blur while discussing his solo career and future music plans.
The guitarist recently revisited an unreleased album that remained on the shelf for years. He explained that changing circumstances encouraged him to finally share the project with listeners. He believes several songs still hold strong value today.
The record, titled Castle Park, dates back to a period before Blur reunited in 2009. At the time, he divided a collection of songs into separate groups. One set eventually formed another release. The remaining tracks stayed unreleased.
He admitted he originally expected those songs to fit future musical trends. However, that moment never arrived. As a result, he decided the material deserved a public release instead of remaining unheard. The musician also reflected on his development as a songwriter. He said he continued learning throughout his career and still views himself as a student of music. He remains fascinated by discovering new sounds and techniques.
While discussing his guitar abilities, Graham Coxon dismissed praise that places him among the greatest players of his generation. He explained that many musicians still inspire him. He regularly studies respected guitarists and believes there is always more to learn. His musical tastes have also evolved with age. He now spends more time listening to sophisticated recordings and experienced performers. At the same time, he still enjoys adventurous and unconventional music.
The guitarist spoke about the origins of his solo career. He revealed that several songs failed to find a place within Blur. Rather than abandon those ideas, he explored them through his own projects. He recalled sharing early material with a bandmate and receiving little enthusiasm. That response encouraged him to continue independently. Soon afterward, he released his first solo album and expanded his creative direction.
Songwriting eventually became an important outlet. He described the process as rewarding and addictive. Creating melodies and lyrics provided satisfaction and personal expression. According to the musician, regular practice improved his writing skills. He also acknowledged the strength of his longtime collaborator’s songwriting abilities. Competition within creative environments often pushed him to develop further.
Away from songwriting, he has recently reconsidered his approach to equipment. He spent many years relying on powerful amplifiers and simple setups. Now he experiments with different sounds and modern gear. Meanwhile, he continues work with his band The WAEVE. The group is currently completing another album. He described the upcoming record as bright and optimistic.
Fans may also see him perform older solo material again. He plans to reunite with longtime musical friends for upcoming shows. Those performances will celebrate songs from across his catalog. Looking ahead, Graham Coxon remains open to future Blur activity. However, he suggested no immediate plans currently exist. For now, he prefers focusing on ongoing projects and new creative opportunities.
Even so, he acknowledged that the band’s future remains uncertain. If circumstances align, another chapter could eventually emerge.
