Authorities are working to determine the cause of a devastating house explosion in Worksop that killed one man and forced dozens of residents to evacuate their homes. The blast occurred Saturday evening on John Street, completely destroying one terraced house and causing partial collapses at two neighboring properties.
Nottinghamshire Police confirmed a man in his 50s was found dead in the wreckage. Eight additional homes and 20 vehicles sustained damage from flying debris. One other person received treatment for minor injuries.
Eyewitnesses described terrifying moments after the explosion. “It was almost like a bomb had hit,” said Marie Mallion, a nearby resident. “Everything shook in the house and things just fell everywhere.” Emergency crews including urban search and rescue specialists scoured the area before concluding their operation Sunday afternoon.
While some displaced residents have returned home, road closures and a security cordon remain in place as investigations continue. Authorities have not yet indicated whether gas or other utilities may have played a role in the tragedy.
Local councils are providing support to affected families as the community grapples with the shock. “You see these things but never think they’re going to happen in your area,” said Joan Smith, a John Street resident.
The incident marks one of Nottinghamshire’s most severe residential explosions in recent years. Officials anticipate the investigation and cleanup will require several more days.
