Layla Moran is calling on the UK government to match its tougher rhetoric on Israel with urgent action. The Lib Dem MP warns that civilians in Gaza now face “unbearably cruel levels of destitution” amid unrelenting bombardment and an aid blockade.
Moran criticised the government’s limited response. Despite a shift in tone, she says little has changed in policy or practice. She urged the UK to recognise a Palestinian state and stop arms sales to Israel. She also condemned the UK’s continued trade links with illegal settlements.
Her comments follow reports from Mohammad, a British-Palestinian NHS doctor whose elderly parents remain trapped in northern Gaza. He described the area as a “slaughterhouse,” with extreme hunger and constant bombing.
Mohammad’s parents previously fled their home after it was destroyed in an Israeli strike. They returned to the ruins, one of the few buildings still standing. Now, they are among the many suffering from severe food shortages and medical neglect.
Mohammad said Gaza’s population has been pushed into a small area with no shelter, no aid, and no food. People are starving, he added. His relatives ration scraps of flour, and oil is sold by the millilitre in syringes.
Layla Moran urges UK action, saying Mohammad’s family’s suffering is part of a broader humanitarian disaster. She called on the UK to stand against starvation being used as a weapon of war. Her appeal follows remarks by UK ministers, including Hamish Falconer, who recently described Israel’s aid blockade as “indefensible.”
The situation continues to worsen. Mohammad reported that over 100 people died in a single night due to Israeli airstrikes. He recounted horrific injuries and the lack of medical supplies or treatment. “Anybody who gets wounded dies,” he said. His father, recovering from colon surgery, and his diabetic mother are especially vulnerable.
Moran said the UK must do more to protect innocent lives. Recognising a Palestinian state would send a powerful message and help secure Palestinian rights. Layla Moran urges UK action to prevent further suffering in a region already devastated by war, hunger, and displacement.
