Adrian Ramsay and Ellie Chowns have launched their joint campaign to lead the Green Party as co-leaders. Their Green leadership bid was announced shortly after Carla Denyer confirmed she would not seek re-election.
Chowns, MP for North Herefordshire, joins Ramsay, who previously served as co-leader with Denyer. Their new partnership will compete against Zack Polanski, the party’s current deputy leader, in this Green leadership bid. Polanski announced his own campaign on 5 May.
Under Green Party rules, two co-leaders must be of different genders. Members vote on the leadership every two years, though Ramsay and Denyer were given a three-year term. That extension happened because members chose to delay leadership changes until after the general election.
The nomination process opens on 2 June. Members will vote throughout August, with results expected on 2 September.
Chowns said the duo plans to lead the party into its “most ambitious chapter yet.” She emphasized the need for leaders deeply engaged in national politics. This Green leadership bid aims to gain more influence across the UK.
Ramsay echoed that sentiment. He said the time has come to expand on “bold Green leadership.” According to him, the Green Party must be ready to act—not only to speak.
He pointed to recent wins in “unwinnable” seats as proof of momentum. He now wants to convert those victories into political power. Ramsay called for electing more MPs and placing Green policies at the core of future governments as part of their Green leadership bid.
Polanski, meanwhile, believes the party must become a mass movement. He hopes to offer voters a clear alternative to Reform UK and Nigel Farage’s populist message.
The Green Party recently had its best general election results to date. It won four constituencies in 2024. It also increased its local councillor count for the eighth year in a row.
Leadership will be crucial in translating those gains into broader national power. All candidates now face a critical summer campaign ahead.
