Sam Thompson Soccer Aid story continues to inspire, even though he can’t play in the match this year. After a painful calf injury, Sam will now coach Team England from the sidelines at Old Trafford.
Originally set to play in the Soccer Aid event, the TV star had to withdraw after completing a brutal 261-mile challenge for UNICEF. The effort raised over £1 million and delivered the match ball from Stamford Bridge to Old Trafford.
Sam won’t just be watching tomorrow. Even if it’s not on the field, his involvement is serious, as he plans to take coaching seriously. “I’ll be shouting from the sidelines,” he joked. “Maybe I’ll suggest a 4-2-3-1 formation.”
Though sidelined, Sam Thompson’s Soccer Aid journey is far from over. His challenge included cycling and running, and it changed his perspective. “This has been the most important thing in my 32 years of life,” he said.
Sam visited UNICEF projects in Guatemala, describing the experience as life-changing. “I’ve never been that quiet,” he added. “I cried while cycling, knowing why we were doing this as part of the Sam Thompson Soccer Aid journey.”
While coaching, Sam will also share the pitch with Louis Tomlinson—his ex Zara McDermott’s new boyfriend. Yet, Sam insists there’s “no hard feelings.” Their interactions have caught attention, but Sam remains professional.
Sam and Zara ended their five-year relationship before Christmas. Zara, 28, is now dating One Direction’s Louis, 33, since March.
