Sir Elton John, known for his incredible career spanning over five decades and his fiery personality, is proving that even at 77, he still commands attention both on and off stage. The legendary musician recently revealed his struggles while working on his surprise new album, Who Believes In Angels?, which he created in collaboration with rocker Brandi Carlile, producer Andrew Watt, and longtime writing partner Bernie Taupin.
The recording sessions, held at the iconic Sunset Sound Studios in Los Angeles, were far from smooth sailing. In a behind-the-scenes trailer, Elton was seen having a tense outburst, throwing down his headphones in frustration and describing the process as a “f***ing nightmare.”
Speaking candidly about the experience, Elton explained, “The reality is I was exhausted. I had a lot of doubt. I was a nightmare. I was angry, I was tired, I was irritable… I felt I don’t want to do it.”
Despite his exhaustion, Elton was determined not to “coast” on his recent achievements, which included monumental performances at Glastonbury and Dodgers Stadium. His perfectionist streak made the process even more demanding, as the team, including Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith, worked tirelessly to complete the album in just 20 days at the end of 2023.
In one particularly tense moment, when producer Andrew Watt asked Elton if he was ready to record, the music icon snapped, “Why do you think I am sitting here?” Watt, known for his work on the Rolling Stones’ Grammy-winning album Hackney Diamonds, responded with exasperation, “I am just trying to make the song as best as it can be… you are so impatient.”
Despite the challenges, Elton’s dedication to pushing boundaries and delivering the best possible work shines through. As he reflected on the sessions, Elton admitted, “I don’t want to coast. I want to be proud of every single thing I do.”
Fans are eagerly anticipating Who Believes In Angels?, which promises to be another remarkable addition to Elton John’s storied discography.
