As two major deadlines loom in the next three months one on a potential US trade deal under Donald Trump and another on resetting UK-EU relations Keir Starmer may soon have to make a decision he has long avoided.
During Brexit negotiations, Theresa May was famously told the UK couldn’t “have its cake and eat it” meaning Britain couldn’t enjoy EU benefits without membership. Now, Starmer faces a similar dilemma: pursuing a US trade deal while seeking closer EU ties.
As one pro-EU campaigner put it: “Chlorinated chicken has replaced cake. You can’t have Trump’s US trade terms and a stronger EU relationship at the same time.”
Starmer has insisted there’s “no choice” between the US and EU, but with key decisions approaching, his balancing act may soon become impossible.
