Ukraine Russia talks received fresh support from European leaders during meetings in London on Sunday. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy gathered to discuss efforts to end the war. Following the talks, the leaders issued a joint statement supporting direct dialogue between Ukraine and Russia.
According to the statement, the leaders backed negotiations with active participation from the United States and European partners. Furthermore, they said direct talks could help secure a ceasefire. They also believe such discussions could create momentum for broader peace negotiations. In addition, they argued that the current front line should serve as the starting point for talks.
The leaders also reaffirmed their position on Ukraine’s sovereignty. Specifically, they said international borders must not change through force. Moreover, they stressed that any future settlement must respect territorial integrity. Therefore, they called for continued diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions.
The meeting came shortly after Zelenskyy proposed a face-to-face meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. However, Putin rejected the proposal. Instead, he said such a meeting should happen only after negotiators reach a potential agreement. Nevertheless, Ukraine Russia talks remain a key objective for Kyiv and its allies.
Meanwhile, the leaders also discussed military support for Ukraine. They highlighted the need to increase interceptor missile production. Additionally, they called for stronger anti-ballistic missile capabilities. They also supported greater cooperation on long-range strike systems.
The joint statement condemned Russia’s continued missile and drone attacks. In particular, the leaders pointed to the repeated use of Oreshnik missiles. They also highlighted the heavy impact on civilians. As a result, they renewed calls for stronger support for Ukraine’s air defence network.
Ukraine has repeatedly requested more ammunition and military equipment. At the same time, Zelenskyy continues to seek stronger international pressure on Moscow. Consequently, Kyiv hopes additional measures will encourage progress toward peace.
The United Kingdom, France, and Germany have remained among Ukraine’s strongest supporters since 2022. Furthermore, the UK and France continue to lead the “coalition of the willing” initiative. The group aims to provide security guarantees as part of a future peace process.
As diplomatic efforts continue, Ukraine Russia talks will likely remain central to international discussions. Ultimately, European leaders hope direct negotiations can lead to a ceasefire and a lasting political settlement.
