In a stark warning, former Cabinet Secretary Sir Simon Case said the UK must be ready for Chinese invasion of Taiwan. He made the comments Talking Politics Podcast.
Moreover, Sir Simon, the UK’s top civil servant until late 2024, believes a Chinese assault on Taiwan could happen by 2027 or 2028. He cautioned that the resulting disruption to global trade would dwarf the economic shocks caused by COVID-19 and the war in Ukraine.
“Our living standards would be massively damaged,” he said. He pointed to the world’s heavy dependence on Taiwan’s semiconductor supply and Chinese manufacturing.
Furthermore, sir simon stated that Western countries often fail to pay attention to authoritarian leaders’ words. He emphasized that President Xi Jinping has clearly told his military to prepare for “reunification,” which the West sees as a full-scale invasion.
“Xi has instructed his forces to be ready,” Case said. “He’s told his economy to withstand sanctions that would follow.”

He reminded listeners that Britain invests heavily in secret intelligence. Yet, he argued, reading autocratic speeches is equally vital. “It’s all there in plain text,” he warned.
Sir Simon also urged closer coordination between Western allies, warning that deterrence would only succeed through unity, readiness, and credible economic resilience.
The talk comes amid global concerns over China’s growing military capabilities and assertive foreign policy. Case’s remarks echo recent calls for Western nations to prepare for a potential conflict in the Asia-Pacific.
