Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer paid £54,718 in income tax for the 2023/24 financial year, according to newly released government documents. The tax was paid on total earnings of £152,225, most of which came from his salary as an MP and Labour leader while in opposition. Additional income included book royalties and £5,174 in savings interest.
The disclosure follows similar tax summaries published by Chancellor Rachel Reeves and Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner. Reeves reported £91,758 in total income, paying £24,215 in tax, while Rayner earned £85,205 and paid £21,514 all from her parliamentary salary.
Starmer’s latest tax payment marks a significant drop from 2022/23, when he paid £52,688 in capital gains tax after selling a field inherited from his father’s estate. That year, his total tax contribution was five times less than former Conservative Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s.
The tradition of UK leaders publishing tax records began with David Cameron in 2016, though Boris Johnson and Liz Truss declined to do so. Sunak and ex-Chancellor Jeremy Hunt released theirs while in office. Reeves initially resisted calls for transparency but later agreed, stating she would follow precedent.
The Conservatives have not committed to releasing leader Kemi Badenoch’s 2023/24 tax return. The party has yet to comment on the latest disclosures.
