The UK government is exploring the possibility of establishing overseas ‘migrant hubs’ to accommodate failed asylum seekers, including those who arrive via small boats. Discussions are still in the early stages, with officials looking at Italy’s approach in Albania as a potential model.
A Home Office source indicated that ministers are assessing the feasibility of relocating asylum seekers to third countries while their claims are processed. Italy has already adopted a similar system, setting up two dedicated facilities in Albania.
According to reports, UK ministers are preparing to open discussions with nations in the western Balkans—such as Albania, Serbia, Bosnia, and North Macedonia—about hosting these centers.
The consideration of this policy follows the release of new images showing migrants arriving in Dover, Kent, over the weekend. Official data from Friday recorded 246 people crossing the Channel in five boats, bringing the estimated total for the year to 5,271.
