Ellen DeGeneres moves to the UK permanently after initially planning only a part-time stay. The comedian confirmed her relocation was influenced by Donald Trump’s re-election and growing concerns over LGBTQ+ rights in the US.
During a talk in Cheltenham, DeGeneres revealed she and wife Portia de Rossi arrived in the UK just before the 2024 US election. After waking up to Trump’s victory, they immediately decided, “We’re staying here.”
Originally, the couple bought a Cotswolds home as a seasonal retreat. However, the political climate shifted their plans. “We love it here,” DeGeneres said, praising the UK’s beauty, polite society, and animal welfare standards.
Since November, DeGeneres has embraced rural life raising chickens, briefly owning sheep, and even seeing snow for the first time. She described the Cotswolds as offering a “simpler way of life” compared to the US. The couple also shipped de Rossi’s horses to their new home, fully committing to their transatlantic move.
DeGeneres expressed concerns about potential rollbacks on same-sex marriage in America. The Southern Baptist Convention’s push to reverse marriage equality laws has prompted her and de Rossi to consider remarrying in the UK.
“If they reverse gay marriage, we’re going to get married here,” she stated. Despite progress, she noted that many LGBTQ+ celebrities still fear coming out due to discrimination.
The talk show host also touched on allegations of a toxic work environment on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, which ended in 2022. She admitted to being “very blunt” but dismissed much of the criticism as “clickbait.” “Does being blunt mean I’m mean?” she questioned, reflecting on the media’s portrayal of her.
While disappointed by US politics, DeGeneres remains optimistic about younger generations. She praised their fluid attitudes toward identity, saying they will “show us the way” toward greater acceptance.
Ellen DeGeneres moves to the UK not just for scenic villages but for a society where she feels safer and more welcomed. Her decision highlights deeper frustrations with America’s direction—and her hope for a more inclusive future.
