Russian warship activity off the southern coast of England has sparked concern after a Russian naval vessel carried out live-fire exercises in international waters near Plymouth. The Russian warship conducted the drills while the Royal Navy monitored its movements. Meanwhile, Britain’s new government described the incident as irresponsible and pledged to remain vigilant.
The Ministry of Defence confirmed that the Russian frigate Neustrashimy carried out the exercise about 40 nautical miles south of Plymouth on Monday. The Royal Navy had already been tracking the vessel as it sailed through nearby waters.
HMS Tyne monitored the Russian ship throughout its transit. However, the situation changed when the Russian crew announced plans to begin live-fire exercises.
The Russian vessel instructed the British patrol ship to move to a safe distance before the drills started. Shortly afterwards, the crew opened the exercise area and fired live ammunition. Officials said the exercise lasted for around 30 minutes. After completing the drills, the Russian vessel continued its journey through international waters.
Although the exercise took place outside British territorial waters, the incident attracted immediate attention from defence officials. Defence Secretary Wes Streeting criticised the Russian action after taking office under Prime Minister Andy Burnham’s new government.
He described the exercise as both irresponsible and deliberately provocative. Furthermore, Streeting said Russia regularly challenges the security of the United Kingdom and its allies. He added that Britain would continue monitoring such activity closely.
Meanwhile, defence officials stressed that Royal Navy personnel acted professionally throughout the operation. They continued observing the Russian ship while following established maritime procedures. Officials also confirmed that the live-fire exercise created no immediate danger to the British coastline. Nevertheless, authorities continued assessing the situation throughout the operation.
Sources familiar with the incident described the exercise as unusual because commercial vessels frequently use the surrounding waters. Consequently, naval officials carefully monitored shipping movements during the exercise to reduce any potential risks.
Several analysts also questioned the timing of the drills. The exercise happened on the same day Andy Burnham formally became prime minister. Therefore, some defence observers suggested Moscow may have intended to send a political message.
Former British Army chief Lord Richard Dannatt said the timing appeared significant. He argued that Russia may have wanted to demonstrate its military presence shortly after Britain’s change in leadership. However, officials have not confirmed any political motive behind the exercise.
The Neustrashimy remains one of Russia’s frontline missile frigates. The vessel carries anti-ship cruise missiles alongside a 100-millimetre naval gun. Military analysts note that the ship can deliver sustained fire during naval operations. Meanwhile, tensions between Britain and Russia have remained high in recent months.
Both countries have increased military activity around European waters. Additionally, the Royal Navy has continued monitoring Russian naval movements through the English Channel and surrounding seas. Defence officials expect similar operations to continue as Russian warships transit near the United Kingdom.
Britain has repeatedly stated that it will protect freedom of navigation while safeguarding national security. The government also reaffirmed its commitment to supporting NATO partners amid continuing regional tensions. Meanwhile, the Royal Navy remains prepared to monitor future Russian naval activity whenever vessels approach British waters.
