Anas Sarwar is expected to leave his role as Scottish Labour leader to join Andy Burnham’s government in Westminster. The move could trigger a leadership contest within Scottish Labour before the next Holyrood election.
Sources close to the discussions say Sarwar will join the Department for Business, Innovation, Science and Trade. Jonathan Reynolds currently leads the department. He is expected to oversee the new appointment. Sarwar has led Scottish Labour since 2021. However, his move to Westminster would end his leadership before the next Scottish Parliament election.
He travelled to London after Burnham became prime minister earlier this week. During the visit, he praised Burnham’s leadership. He also welcomed what he described as a bold vision for the Labour Party.
Burnham announced his Cabinet on Monday. However, he continues appointing ministers to the remaining government roles. Sarwar previously said he wanted to remain Scottish Labour leader after Keir Starmer resigned. He also said he intended to serve throughout the current Holyrood parliamentary term.
In addition, Sarwar pledged to challenge Nigel Farage and Reform UK in Scotland. He said he remained determined to strengthen Labour before the next Scottish election. Nevertheless, recent developments suggest he will move into a senior government position.
Sarwar would need a seat in the House of Lords before taking the role. He does not currently hold a seat in the House of Commons.
Meanwhile, political opponents criticised the reported decision. SNP deputy leader Keith Brown questioned the move. He argued it contradicted Burnham’s promises to reform Westminster politics. Brown also said appointing Sarwar through the House of Lords would weaken Labour’s commitment to democratic reform.
Furthermore, he argued the decision conflicted with Burnham’s support for greater devolution. Brown also criticised Sarwar’s leadership after Labour’s disappointing election results in Scotland. He claimed the party continued rewarding senior figures despite poor performances.
Meanwhile, Labour has not officially confirmed Sarwar’s appointment. Government officials have also not announced the remaining ministerial positions. However, Westminster expects more appointments in the coming days. Burnham continues forming his new administration.
Sarwar’s departure would leave Scottish Labour searching for a new leader. The party would then organise a leadership contest before the next Holyrood election campaign. Several senior Scottish Labour figures could enter the race if the position becomes vacant.
Meanwhile, Burnham continues building his government. His administration has already outlined plans for economic growth, stronger public services and greater regional investment. Additionally, Burnham has promised to give local communities more influence over decision-making across the United Kingdom.
Political observers expect confirmation of Sarwar’s future within days. If the appointment proceeds, Scottish Labour will begin choosing a new leader. Sarwar will then start his ministerial role in Burnham’s government.
