George Michael’s sister, Yioda Panayiotou, has won her planning battle to carry out extensive renovations at the late singer’s £10 million Hampstead mansion, despite strong opposition from neighbours and conservation groups.
Yioda, George Michael’s only surviving sibling, was granted permission by Camden Council to remove and prune historic trees at the property, which had fallen into significant disrepair since the iconic singer’s passing in 2016. Recent photographs showed the once-grand mansion in a state of decay, prompting Yioda’s decision to undertake major restoration works.
However, the proposals sparked fury among locals, particularly the Redington Frognal Neighbourhood Forum (RFNF), which expressed deep concerns over the loss of mature trees that provide vital wildlife habitats. The group described the plans as “regrettable” and raised issues about potential environmental impacts, including the timing of the works during nesting season.
Despite this, Camden Council approved the plans, concluding that the trees in question were neither culturally significant nor particularly rare. In its official report, the council stated the trees were not prominently visible and their removal would not negatively affect the local conservation area.
Yioda inherited the majority of George Michael’s £98 million estate alongside their sister Melanie, who tragically passed away three years after George’s death.
