Prince Jacaerys Velaryon suffered one of the season’s earliest major losses. Rhaenyra Targaryen’s eldest son joined the Battle of the Gullett to support his mother’s war effort.
Jacaerys rode his dragon Vermax into the battle. However, the fight quickly turned against them. Sheepstealer attacked Vermax during the chaos. The dragon then suffered further damage after attackers struck it with a harpoon.
Jacaerys also came under attack from enemy forces. Arrows eventually killed him as the battle unfolded. Vermax also died during the confrontation. His death left Rhaenyra facing another devastating loss involving one of her sons. Admiral Sharako Lohar also died during the Battle of the Gullett. She had focused heavily on defeating Lord Corlys Velaryon.
Lohar initially appeared to gain the advantage during their confrontation. Corlys, however, survived after falling into the sea. Alyn of Hull then entered the fight. He attempted to drown Lohar before ultimately stabbing her in the neck. Ser Simon Strong became another early casualty. Aemond Targaryen killed him at Harrenhal during the second episode.
Aemond later took control of the castle. His actions further demonstrated his growing influence during the conflict. Otto Hightower also met a violent end. Rhaenyra personally ordered his execution after his political actions against her. Otto had supported Aegon II’s claim to the Iron Throne. Rhaenyra therefore blamed him for helping challenge her position.
She ordered his beheading at the end of the second episode. His death marked another major turning point. Ser Criston Cole also failed to survive the season. His final moments came as his forces faced overwhelming opposition. Cole understood that his position had become increasingly dangerous. Despite the odds, he sought a final opportunity for an honorable death.
He challenged Ser Oscar Tully to a duel. However, the confrontation ended differently than he expected. A volley of arrows killed Cole before he could achieve the heroic ending he wanted. His thoughts reportedly remained focused on Alicent Hightower.

Ormund Hightower became another casualty during the Battle of Tumbleton. His earlier treatment of Ulf the White helped create the circumstances surrounding his death. Ulf’s dragon Silverwing attacked during the chaotic battle. The dragon ultimately burned Ormund alive.
Lord Roderick Dustin also died during the same confrontation. The commander led Rhaenyra’s Winter Wolves into battle. Roderick suffered severe injuries while fighting Ormund. Despite losing an arm, he continued fighting.
He eventually drove his sword into Ormund. However, Silverwing then attacked both men. The dragon killed them together during the battle. Their deaths added another brutal moment to the season.
Helaena Targaryen suffered perhaps the most heartbreaking death. Her storyline had become increasingly tragic throughout the season. Helaena struggled with grief, depression and disturbing visions. Her pregnancy also added to her emotional burden. Meanwhile, Rhaenyra’s increasingly ruthless actions affected her deeply. The pressure eventually became overwhelming.
Helaena died in the season three finale. She jumped from her bedroom window and fell onto spikes below. Her death marked one of the season’s most devastating moments.
