Prince Harry’s return to the UK has done little to improve his relationship with Prince William, according to royal commentator Andrew Morton.
Harry and Meghan Markle recently returned to Britain after spending several years living in California. Their visit raised hopes that Harry and William could repair their strained relationship.
However, reports suggest the brothers have barely spoken during Harry’s latest time in the UK.
Harry has reportedly rebuilt some contact with his father, King Charles III, during previous visits. However, his relationship with William remains deeply strained.
Royal biographer Andrew Morton recently discussed the brothers’ relationship and Harry’s role within the Royal Family.
Morton described Harry as William’s former “wingman.” He argued that Harry has since become a “hitman” because of his public criticism of the Royal Family.
The biographer said the brothers once had a strong bond. He also suggested that the Royal Family expected Harry to support William throughout his future reign.
William remains the heir to the British throne. Harry, as the younger brother, held a different position within the monarchy.
Morton said Harry’s position created different expectations. He pointed to Harry’s memoir and public comments about his experiences within the Royal Family.
Harry detailed several grievances in his memoir, Spare. The book discussed his childhood, his relationship with William and his experiences as a member of the monarchy.
Morton argued that senior members of the Royal Family once believed Harry would remain loyal to the institution.
He said Harry’s public criticism damaged that trust.
The comments came during discussions on the podcast Heirs & Spares. Presenters Kinsey Schofield and Rupert Bell examined the continuing tension between Harry and William.
Schofield questioned whether Harry understands the impact of his actions on the Royal Family.
Bell agreed and suggested that William may feel particularly hurt by the situation.
He argued that William once expected Harry to remain a loyal supporter. He compared this expectation with the support Princess Anne has given King Charles.
William is preparing for his future role as king. Meanwhile, Harry has built a separate life with Meghan in the United States.
The brothers have continued to make separate public appearances since Harry stepped back from royal duties.
Their relationship has faced further pressure following Harry’s interviews, memoir and other public statements.
Despite occasional signs of improved communication between Harry and his father, Harry and William have shown fewer signs of reconciliation.
For now, the brothers appear to remain divided. Their latest UK reunion has therefore failed to produce the reconciliation many royal observers had hoped to see.
