Trump plane swap took place at RAF Mildenhall as US President Donald Trump made a brief stop in the United Kingdom before continuing his journey home from the NATO summit in Türkiye. The Trump plane swap marked the president’s first use of a new aircraft recently gifted by the Qatari government. The Trump plane swap also allowed US military personnel stationed in Britain to view the aircraft before it departed.
President Donald Trump arrived at RAF Mildenhall in Suffolk on Wednesday after leaving the NATO summit in Ankara. He landed aboard an older version of Air Force One before transferring to the newer aircraft for the remainder of his trip.
According to the president, he chose to fly the older aircraft from Türkiye “for old time’s sake.” However, reporters travelling on board received instructions to keep their window blinds closed throughout the flight. When asked about the reason for the request, Trump suggested it related to potential security concerns. He appeared to reference Iran while saying there were “sleazebags over here.”
The president also said he faces security threats on a regular basis.
“I have a threat all the time,” Trump told reporters. “I’m number one on their list.”
Before arriving in Britain, Trump announced the stopover on his Truth Social platform. He explained that the visit would allow members of the US military based at RAF Mildenhall to see the new presidential aircraft up close. Trump said the aircraft represented a chance to honor American service members and their families. He described the plane as “brand new” and “truly spectacular.”
During the visit, the president greeted military personnel, spoke with reporters and spent time with members of the US forces stationed at the base. RAF Mildenhall also welcomed the visit through its official social media channels. Base officials described the occasion as a memorable event for military personnel and their families.
The base said airmen, support staff and relatives gathered to view the aircraft during the special visit. Officials added that the event recognized the daily contributions made by everyone supporting the base’s mission. Photographs released by RAF Mildenhall showed service members and families gathered near the aircraft while Trump addressed those in attendance.
The stop in Suffolk lasted only a short time before the president boarded the new aircraft and resumed his journey to the United States. The aircraft itself has attracted international attention after Qatar presented it to the United States for presidential use. The gift has generated political debate in Washington, although the White House has defended the arrangement.
Despite the controversy surrounding the aircraft, Wednesday’s stop focused on giving military personnel an opportunity to view it before the president departed. The brief visit also highlighted RAF Mildenhall’s continuing role as an important hub for US military operations in Europe. The base regularly supports American air missions and hosts US Air Force personnel stationed in the United Kingdom.
Following the aircraft transfer, President Donald Trump departed RAF Mildenhall and continued his flight home after concluding his NATO engagements in Türkiye.
