Urgent Humanitarian Aid to Gaza UK Joins International Airdrop Efforts Amid Crisis

Must read

Prime Minister Keir Starmer has confirmed that the UK will help deliver urgent humanitarian aid to Gaza through air drops. This decision follows Israel’s recent approval for foreign nations to conduct aid flights. Starmer emphasized that while the move comes too late, the UK will do everything possible to assist.

More than 220 MPs from nine political parties have also urged the government to recognize a Palestinian state. France recently committed to doing so within months, increasing pressure on the UK. Meanwhile, Starmer stressed that any recognition must align with a broader two-state solution plan.

The push for urgent humanitarian aid to Gaza comes as conditions worsen. The UN reports that nearly a third of Gazans endure days without food. Malnutrition rates are soaring, with 90,000 women and children needing immediate treatment. Israel denies imposing a siege, instead blaming Hamas for the crisis.

Previously, the UK partnered with Jordan to airdrop supplies, including food and medicine. The RAF also delivered over 100 tonnes of aid in early 2024. However, aid groups warn that airdrops are inefficient compared to ground deliveries.

Alongside aid efforts, Starmer announced faster medical evacuations for critically ill Gazan children. So far, only two children have been brought to the UK for treatment. Project Pure Hope, a healthcare initiative, facilitated their transfer from Egypt.

France’s pledge to recognize Palestine has intensified debates. While President Macron sees it as a step toward peace, former US President Trump dismissed the move. Starmer, however, insists any recognition must be part of a long-term peace strategy.

Despite Israel’s approval, Jordan has yet to receive permission for new airdrops. The UN criticizes the method as a “distraction” from broader access issues. Meanwhile, Starmer vows to “pull every lever” to increase urgent humanitarian aid to Gaza.

As global pressure mounts, the UK’s role in alleviating the crisis remains crucial. With starvation and disease spreading, immediate action is essential to prevent further tragedy.
