Political leaders across the UK are demanding an urgent Gaza intervention to halt the worsening humanitarian crisis. MPs, MLAs, MSPs, and MSs from multiple parties have signed a letter urging Prime Minister Keir Starmer to act immediately. The SDLP-led appeal includes Sinn Féin, Alliance, the SNP, Plaid Cymru, and others.
The letter calls for Parliament’s recall, increased diplomatic efforts, and a halt to UK arms sales to Israel. Starmer previously stated the UK would recognize a Palestinian state by September unless Israel changes course. However, politicians argue this timeline is too slow.
France recently joined Ireland, Spain, and Norway in recognizing Palestinian statehood. The UK now faces growing pressure to follow suit. The letter warns that delays cost lives daily, stating, “Every day means more children starve and more families suffer.”
SDLP leader Claire Hanna emphasized public frustration with the UK’s stance. She said, “Our collective voice reflects the anger at Netanyahu’s actions and the UK’s failure to stop them.” The letter also demands unrestricted aid access to Gaza, where famine risks escalate.
While condemning Hamas’s October 7 attacks, the signatories stress Israel’s military response has gone too far. Over 60,000 Palestinians have died, according to Gaza’s health ministry. Israel denies genocide allegations but faces global criticism over civilian casualties.
The UK’s potential recognition of Palestine has drawn Israeli backlash, calling it a “reward for terrorism.” It also strains US-UK relations, as Washington opposes the move. Meanwhile, Israel’s planned Gaza City takeover has drawn condemnation, including from Starmer.
The letter concludes, “History will judge whether we stood silent or acted for humanity.” With famine and violence worsening, politicians insist an urgent Gaza intervention cannot wait.
