Duchess Sophie has announced a new charity role after another busy week of royal engagements. The Duchess of Edinburgh, 61, has become the royal patron of Visualise Scotland. The Edinburgh-based charity supports people with disabilities across Edinburgh and East Lothian.
The announcement follows Sophie’s recent visit to Edinburgh with her husband, Prince Edward. A new portrait also marked the Duchess’s latest royal appointment. The image shows Sophie at Bagshot Park wearing an elegant cream dress. She paired the outfit with gold hoop earrings and plum-coloured nail polish. Meanwhile, her blonde hair remained styled in her familiar chignon.
Visualise Scotland provides several services for people with disabilities. These services include housing support, supported living and various day programmes. The charity originally focused on supporting people with visual impairments. However, it has since expanded its work to support people with different disabilities.
Pauline Gray, the organisation’s chief executive, welcomed Sophie’s new role. She said the charity felt honoured to have Sophie as its royal patron. Gray also highlighted the Duchess’s long-standing commitment to disability support.
Duchess Sophie has supported several organisations focused on disability and inclusion. Therefore, her latest patronage adds another cause to her growing portfolio. The appointment also comes during a particularly active period for the royal.
Sophie and Prince Edward recently attended several public events across Britain. Last Friday, the couple enjoyed an evening at the theatre with their daughter, Lady Louise Windsor. Louise attended alongside her partner, Felix da Silva Clamp. The group watched Inala at a West End theatre.
Lady Louise, 22, recently completed her studies at the University of St Andrews. She reportedly met Felix during her time at the university. Meanwhile, Buckingham Palace has confirmed that Louise will now take a gap year.
Sophie has also continued her own programme of public engagements. She recently visited Capability Scotland to mark the organisation’s 80th anniversary. The charity provides care, education and support for disabled people.
The Duchess also attended the European Athletics Championships with Prince Edward. Earlier in the week, she visited an indoor skiing centre in Hemel Hempstead. As a result, the couple have maintained a busy schedule during the royal summer break.
Much of the Royal Family has now reduced its public programme. King Charles and Queen Camilla have entered their summer holiday period. Prince William and Catherine have also reduced their public engagements. However, Edward and Sophie have continued with several official appearances.
Duchess Sophie has increasingly taken on important roles within the Royal Family. Her work covers disability support, international causes and women’s issues. In addition, she has developed a strong profile through regular community visits.
Her latest patronage reflects that continued focus on practical support. At the same time, the Edinburgh family has enjoyed several personal milestones. Their son, James, Earl of Wessex, recently received his A-level results. He will reportedly begin studying at the Royal Agricultural University in September.
For Sophie, the new patronage adds another significant responsibility to her calendar. It also strengthens her connection with disability services across Scotland. Furthermore, her involvement could bring greater attention to the charity’s work.
The Duchess will now support Visualise Scotland through future royal engagements. Her appointment also highlights her continued commitment to communities across Scotland. Overall, the new role marks another important step in Sophie’s growing royal responsibilities.
